Workshop · Mastery Tier 03

First Body of Work

Time: 4-8 weeks

Build 10 pieces in one consistent style. The portfolio that proves you have a voice, not just a hand. This is when a hobbyist becomes an artist.

10 cohesive pieces is the threshold. Below that, you have promising work. At 10+ consistent pieces, you have a portfolio — something a gallery, a magazine, a client, or a viewer can actually engage with. The discipline of staying in one lane for 10 pieces is what most beginners skip. They scatter. The body of work doesn’t accumulate. Don’t do that.

Materials.

📚

Your already-chosen lane

If you don’t have one yet, do First Lane first. This workshop assumes you’ve picked your style.

🎨

Consistent materials

Same paper, same paint, same digital settings across all 10 pieces. Consistency in materials creates consistency in look.

📅

A schedule

10 pieces in 6 weeks = one piece every 4-5 days. Mark dates on a calendar. Show up.

Step by step.

Step 01

Lock the constraints.

Subject area (portraits, landscapes, characters, whatever). Color palette (4-6 colors max). Size and aspect ratio. The constraints are the body of work’s signature.

Step 02

Pieces 1-3: Find your voice.

These will be uneven. Don’t worry. You’re calibrating. Keep them; they’ll matter as evidence of your starting point.

Step 03

Pieces 4-7: Hit your stride.

By piece 4, you’ll feel the rhythm. By piece 7, you’ll be making your strongest work. This is the sweet spot.

Step 04

Pieces 8-10: Push the edges.

By piece 8, your style is locked enough that you can experiment within it. Push composition, push color, push subject — while staying recognizable as YOU.

Step 05

Lay all 10 out together.

Photograph them as one grid. Look at them as one piece. Now you have a body of work. Title it. The title is part of the piece.

Signs you’re doing it right.

🧵

A consistent thread

Without forcing it, the 10 should share something. Color, mood, mark, subject. That thread IS your style.

📈

Improvement from piece 1 to piece 10

Piece 10 should be measurably stronger than piece 1. If not, you stopped pushing yourself.

🔍

Surprises

The piece you thought would be your weakest is often your strongest. The one you stressed over might be the dud. Trust the body, not the prediction.

If you’re stuck, it’s probably one of these.

🔀

Switching styles mid-series

If piece 5 looks like a completely different artist made it, your body of work isn’t a body — it’s a sampler. Hold the line.

Trying to make all 10 great

Some pieces in any body of work are stronger than others. That’s normal. Finish all 10 anyway.

🤒

Burning out at piece 6

The middle is the hardest. Push through. Most quit here.
