Every link on the Canvas that goes to an outside site
This page lists every external link on The Canvas. We update it whenever we add a new link. If anything here is broken, leads somewhere it shouldn’t, or makes you uncomfortable, tell us at /feedback/.
Our policy in one screen
Six rules every external link on The Canvas follows.
1. Art sources only. Museums, artist foundations, archives, and a small number of individual artist portfolios. No social media, no video platforms, no comment-sections.
2. New tab, always. Every external link opens in a new browser tab. The Canvas stays open underneath. Closing the tab returns your cadet to where they were.
3. No tracking. The links are plain HTML. We don’t add analytics to clicks. We don’t know which links get followed and we don’t want to.
4. Curated, not crowdsourced. Every link below was added by hand. None of these come from an automated source. None will ever come from a cadet submission — that’s a separate process with separate review.
5. Quarterly refresh. We check every link every three months. Broken links get fixed or removed. Changed sites get re-vetted.
6. Parent reports go to the top of the queue. If you flag a link, we look at it the same day we receive the message.

Every artist in the deep-dive style branches has at least one major work in one of these collections. The cadet can see the actual brushstrokes, often in higher resolution than we can show on the Canvas.

- moma.org →Museum of Modern Art (NYC). The defining collection of 20th-century painting and sculpture.
- metmuseum.org →The Met Open Access (NYC). 400,000+ public-domain images, freely downloadable.
- si.edu/openaccess →Smithsonian Open Access (DC). 4.5 million+ public-domain works across multiple Smithsonian museums.
- rijksmuseum.nl/en/rijksstudio →Rijksmuseum Rijksstudio (Amsterdam). Dutch masters — Vermeer, Rembrandt — high-resolution and downloadable.
- artic.edu/collection →Art Institute of Chicago. Strong American 19th- and 20th-century collection; CC0 license on much of it.
- brooklynmuseum.org →Brooklyn Museum. Notable holdings in contemporary art, including the largest public Basquiat collection.
- cooperhewitt.org →Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum. Design-focused; strong on illustration history.

Every public-domain image embedded on The Canvas comes from these archives. They’re also good places for cadets to find other historical works to study.

When this gets updated
Living document.
We add new links as the Canvas grows. When a cadet asks about a specific artist in a workshop, we may add that artist’s museum link in a later refresh. This page reflects every external link on the planet at any given time — if it’s not listed here and you see it on the planet, that’s a bug. Tell us.
