The seed that looks like nothing is happening while it builds a root. The seedling that grew fastest and cannot hold itself up. The plant that struggled for months and took off when somebody moved it three feet. Every mission is a real growing fact you can test on a windowsill — and then says plainly what it means for a person, rather than leaving you to guess at a metaphor.

Long ago, when cadets were young, the planet of Cultivation was one. Plants grew on its surface; the inner self grew at its core. The two were one because the cadet was one — small enough to hold both.

How a plant grows (and how YOU do)

The same four things make plants grow. The same four things make you grow.

Water

For plants: water moves nutrients up the stem. Without it, the plant wilts.

For you: drink water. Sounds simple. The brain works better when the body has water.

Light

For plants: photosynthesis turns sunlight into food. No light = no food = no growth.

For you: pay attention to the world. Reading, listening, watching real things. That's your light.

Soil

For plants: roots pull nutrients from soil. Bad soil = small plant. Good soil = big plant.

For you: the people around you. Family, friends, teachers. Good soil grows good kids.

Time

For plants: growth is slow. A flower takes weeks. A tree takes years.

For you: same thing. You don't get strong, smart, or kind in one day. You get there over years.

Around the World

The human story of growing food from the ground

Farming was not invented once, in one place. People worked it out separately, on four different continents, and each place solved a different problem. Every one of these is something you can still go and see.

The Fertile Crescent
Wheat and barley, about ten thousand years ago. The first people to save seed from the best plants instead of eating all of it.
Mesoamerica
Corn, beans, and squash grown together — the Three Sisters. The corn holds the beans up, the beans feed the soil, the squash shades out the weeds.
The Yangtze Valley, China
Rice. Somebody worked out that flooding a field on purpose kills the weeds but not the crop.
The Andes
Potatoes — thousands of kinds, bred for different heights of mountain. They also learned to freeze-dry them in the cold night air so food kept for years.
