First Listen constellation

Most humans don't actually listen. They wait for the other person to stop talking so they can say the thing they were already thinking.

Listening means receiving the whole message before composing your reply. The opposite is what most of us do: hear the first three seconds, decide what we think, and start mentally writing our response while the other person is still talking.

Real listening costs you something. You have to set down your own answer for a minute. You have to risk learning something that changes what you were going to say. That risk is the whole skill.

By the end of this workshop you'll have run one real listening practice and noticed the difference.

Step 4 · Create

Run one real listening practice today

Pick one person you'll talk to today. Decide in advance: you will not speak until they're fully done. Then write what happened — what they actually said, and what you almost interrupted with.

Stuck? Try it with a grown-up at dinner. When they answer 'how was your day,' don't ask the next question while they're still answering. See how long they actually go if you let them.
