The Relationships Deck.

Twenty-four cards. Four suits — See, Build, Repair, Choose. Print, cut, carry. Pull one a week. The people in your world are the universe inside your universe.

Suit One · See · Cards 01-06 · who's in your world
01 · See
Real friends vs. just-around kids.
Real friends are nice when nobody's watching. The kid who's only nice when they want something is just-around, not a friend.
02 · See
Different is good.
Your friend doesn't laugh at the same jokes. Your sister doesn't love the same food. Different is the point, not a problem.
03 · See
Who makes you feel like yourself?
Some people make you feel like you. Some make you feel small. Notice the difference. Spend more time with the first kind.
04 · See
Three trusted adults.
Parent, grandparent, teacher, coach, counselor, family friend. Pick three. Know who to go to before you need them.
05 · See
Family is its own kind.
Parents, siblings, cousins, grandparents. Not perfect. Real. You'll learn to love them AND see the parts that aren't perfect. Both is okay.
06 · See
Pets and animals count.
A real relationship. Tending a creature is practice for tending everything else. They're relationships, not just things.
Suit Two · Build · Cards 07-12
07 · Build
Kindness as default.
Not fake-nice. Real kindness. Costs nothing; means almost everything.
08 · Build
Listening — really.
When a friend talks, hear them. Most kids wait for their turn. Be the one who actually listens.
09 · Build
Do what you said.
Show up. Bring back the borrowed thing. Save the seat. Most kids forget; the kid who remembers gets trusted with bigger things.
10 · Build
Ask real questions.
"How was your weekend?" can be real if you actually listen to the answer.
11 · Build
Include the left-out kid.
Even when it's awkward. You'll remember it. They'll remember it longer.
12 · Build
Be different in the right way.
You don't have to copy the group to belong. The kid who's themselves usually ends up with better friends than the kid who's a copy.
Suit Three · Repair · Cards 13-18
13 · Repair
Arguments aren't the end.
All friendships have hard days. The fight isn't the problem; the not-fixing-it is.
14 · Repair
The 3-part apology.
"I'm sorry I [did the thing]. I know it hurt because [reason]. Next time I'll [different choice]." No "but." No "you also."
15 · Repair
Listening is the other half.
When the other kid tells you what hurt, hear it. Don't defend, don't interrupt, don't explain. Just hear.
16 · Repair
Make peace fast.
Don't carry the fight for days. The faster you repair, the smaller it stays.
17 · Repair
Friendships change — and that's okay.
The best friend at 6 isn't always the best friend at 10. Things change as you grow. Normal, not a failure.
18 · Repair
Tell the truth, kindly.
Don't lie to keep a friend. Don't be mean. The middle is the practice: honest words, kind tone.
Suit Four · Choose · Cards 19-24
19 · Choose
Skip the gossip.
The kid who gossips to you about others gossips about you to others. Practice changing the subject.
20 · Choose
Skip the crowd-please.
Being whoever the group wants you to be ends with no real friends — just an audience. Be yourself; find people who like you.
21 · Choose
Skip the "just kidding" mean-jokes.
If it stings, it's mean, even if they say "just kidding." Real friends don't aim jokes that stick.
22 · Choose
No touch-secrets.
If anyone asks you to keep a touch secret, tell another trusted adult right away. Childhelp 1-800-422-4453. Free, for kids, anytime.
23 · Choose
Tell when something's wrong.
If a friend is hurting you or asking you to do unsafe things — tell a trusted adult. You won't be in trouble.
24 · Choose
