A parent-readable map of what helps a cadet learn math — and what looks like it helps but actually replaces the learning.
Math doesn't need expensive tools. A pencil, grid paper, and a kid willing to face the problem beats $300 of math software every time. The trap is that the software feels like progress without producing any.
What you want: tools that surface the why. What you don't want: tools that hide the why behind a "tap to get the answer" button.
A whole pad of grid paper costs less than a fast-food meal. Works for arithmetic, geometry, fractions, graphing — everything.
Rule: cadet keeps every page they fill. The "math I tried" pile is the curriculum.
Analog. Fractions and angles in physical form. Worth more than any "tell time" app ever made.
Rule: at least one in the cadet's room or kitchen.
For real-world geometry. Doors are shapes. Tables have areas. The tape connects math to the room.
Rule: hand it over — the cadet measures things, you don't.
Free. Solid. Especially strong for the foundation track (counting through fractions). Honest about what it doesn't teach.
Rule: pick a topic, finish the topic. Don't let the cadet hop randomly.
Comic-book-style problem sets. Aimed at advanced cadets but the entry levels work for any motivated reader.
Rule: physical books beat the app at this age.
Physical objects that show place value, fractions, addition. Underrated for kids who freeze on abstract numbers.
Rule: the rods are toys for math — let the cadet play with them.
Singapore Math, Art of Problem Solving's intro books. One problem a day at the breakfast table.
Rule: parent does the problem too. Side by side beats supervision.
After number-sense lands, a calculator is a real tool. Before that, it's a crutch.
Rule: introduce in 5th grade or after Workshop 03 (estimate-first), whichever is later.
Apps that solve a problem from a photo. Useful for checking work. Disastrous for learning if used to skip work.
Rule: only after the cadet has written their own answer. As a check, not a generator.
Subscription math games. Some are decent. Most have heavy gamification that pulls focus from the actual math.
Rule: 20 minutes max per session, parent reviews progress weekly.
"Multiply 2-digit numbers in 3 seconds." Memorized tricks without the why are not math — they're parlor games.
Rule: skip until the underlying operation is understood.
If the AI does the homework, no learning happens. The struggle IS the curriculum.
Rule: skip entirely until middle school, then only as a check.
Speed pressure on a kid still building number-sense produces math anxiety, not math fluency. Research is clear on this.
