The Lab · Workshop 05 · Practice
Five steps. About 25 minutes. Up to 7 stars. The constellation you're building is called First Mixture.
Salt in water. Oil and water. Vinegar and baking soda. Every kitchen is a chemistry lab. The question is whether you're paying attention.
When two substances meet, three things can happen. They dissolve (one disappears into the other). They separate (they refuse to mix and form layers). Or they react (they make a new substance with new properties).
A scientist predicts which one will happen before the substances meet. Sometimes the prediction is right. Sometimes the prediction is wrong — and that's when the real learning starts.
By the end of this workshop you'll have planned one safe at-home mixture, predicted what will happen, and identified what you'd need a grown-up for.
That's the warm-up. When you've actually read it — not skimmed — tap below.
Pick the ones that REACT (make a new substance) — not the ones that just dissolve or separate.
Click a combination, then what happens.
Pick a safe combination to try. Predict what will happen. Note what you'd need a grown-up for.
Stuck? Try: 1 spoon of vegetable oil + half a cup of water in a clear glass. Predict before pouring: separate? Dissolve? Watch what actually happens. Then add a drop of dish soap and watch again.
One sentence in your own words.
